Five Tips to Happily Shape Your Pet’s Behavior

By: Dan Glaser

I’ve been training dogs for nearly 20 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned: positive incentives work best.

  1. Start with Happiness – I always start by focusing on building a healthy and stress-free approach working with my clients’ pets. Dogs enjoy learning through happy, positive reinforcement. A playful approach helps set the tone from the get-go.
  2. Be Consistent – Training is not a “one-time and done” activity. It takes practice beyond the initial training sessions. What happens in Dog’s Mind Training has to follow you home.
  3. Teach the Behaviors You Want to See – Choosing the right “tricks” for your pet to learn is fundamental. Sit, stay, and fetch are three of the most common, and useful commands I teach. Be sure to choose the ones that will be most beneficial for you and your furry family member.
  4. Your Energy is Your Pet’s Energy Your pet is very intuitive and picks up on the signals you send out. If you are anxious and fearful, your dog will reflect that and respond accordingly. My training methods are based on nature, good manners, and love.
  5. Serve Reinforcement – Treats and training go hand in hand. My personal favorites are crunchy beef lung, which can be easily broken into bite-size pieces and rewarded generously to reward positive behavior. I’m a strong believer in delicious, natural, and protein-rich treats, that can be immediately shared and easily digested, keeping pets happy and engaged in their training exercise.
